CPMA

A short guide to getting started with CPMA. Follow the instructions below to get yourself started with Quake3 and CPMA. For the less PC literate, I included example directories below steps that require placement of files.

  1. Create a directory on your PC for the game itself. Typically just named "Quake3". Inside of that folder create a "baseq3" folder.
    /> C:\Quake3\baseq3\
  2. Download pak0.pk3 into your "baseq3" directory.
    /> C:\Quake3\baseq3\pak0.pk3
  3. Download the latest patch for Quake3, point release 1.32. Install the patch, make sure that you install it to the root game directory (one directory above baseq3).
    /> C:\Quake3\
  4. Visit promode.org and download the latest version of CPMA and ChallengeQuake3.
  5. Extract the latest version of CPMA into your root game directory. It should create a "cpma" folder in the same directory as "baseq3". Place the ChallengeQuake3.exe in the root directory, the same directory where quake3.exe is found.
    /> C:\Quake3\
  6. Download and install the CPM map pack. You may also want to download the compiled popular custom maps archive for the SoCo server. All map pk3's should be placed in the "baseq3" directory.
    /> C:\Quake3\baseq3\
  7. You can now launch CPMA by opening ChallengeQuake3.exe, if you want to use the outdated quake3.exe client remember to load CPMA by adding "+set fs_game cpma" to the target path in the shortcut properties. Users that have issues with ChallengeQuake3 not being able to connect to servers are often able to remedy the problem by adding the cnq3.exe to their firewall exceptions.
  8. Extra notes: First, ChallengeQuake3 does not write user modifications to the configuration file, so after every change you make (either through the GUI or the console) you should write your config to a file using the command "/writeconfig autoexec" to guarantee that the settings you changed will stick after closing the game. Second, to make your CPMA automatically record MVD demos and take screenshots, open up your q3config inside of your CPMA folder and search for: "cg_autoAction" and set its value to "14". You will also want to set "ch_recordMessage" to "0" so the message will not clutter your HUD.
    /> C:\Quake3\cpma\q3config.cfg

Maps

The Southern Comfort CPMA server has many custom maps on it. Since the Quake3 engine does not support HTTP or FTP redirect options for custom files, we have compiled a single archive of all the final custom maps on the server. Maps that are not finished are linked as individual archives.

Maps on the server that are not in the compiled pack include b0_beta6 (3.9MB), map_astronomybeta (4.5MB), map_cu3ctf1 (6.6MB), map_cu3dm1 (7.4MB), akumacpm1a (4.5MB), xfdm2 (3.5MB), avrdm1b (4.3MB), crescent (8.5MB) and pukka3tourney6 (13.5MB).

Help

There are plenty of good resources to get new players started in the realm of CPM. Below are some links to critical resources for new players.

Demos should be placed in the "demos" folder inside of the "cpma" folder which can be created if it does not exist.

/> C:\Quake3\cpma\demos\

If all else fails, ask someone for help! See the What section for contact information, or consider joining the official #promode channel on QuakeNet.

Events

On occasion, the great people behind the SoCo server will run tournaments for CPM. Thus far, they have been limited to newer players, primarily those from other games looking to start playing CPM. Events are run through IRC and use a simple bracket system.

Movies

Both epitaph and cuirass have created CPMA movies. Cuirass released "Cuirass' Mini Movie" as a joke which featured only frags from himself. "Rogue Bagel" is a full-length film that features frags from epitaph, cuirass, thrice, zyth and iiko.

What

Southern Comfort is the name of a Quake3 CPMA server. The name has somewhat dubious origins. Originally an Unreal Tournament 2004 server, Southern Comfort (or SoCo for short) was located in Atlanta, Georgia. It was one of the few servers that southern players could enjoy a ping less than 30ms. It was also an obvious play on the brand of the whiskey liqueur also known as SoCo. The server was eventually moved to a datacenter closer to home in Cincinnati, Ohio where it resides to this day.

The server is maintained by epitaph with consultation help, map suggestions and update reminders by cuirass. Feel free to join us in IRC by joining #roguebagel on QuakeNET.
